1 North Key

A ceremonial key used for the official opening of 1 North by Lord Tangley of Blackheath, the chairman of the Council, on September 21, 1965, the first day of the Michaelmas Term. The first purpose-built house in the School’s history was built as part of Cranleigh’s centenary celebrations – Cubitt had become the seventh house when it opened in 1961 but it had had to work within the confines of the old Sanatorium. 1 North, removed from its old home on the north side of the Quad, guaranteed all boys a toye and all in the sixth form a study. “The new house is a bold concept,” said Ken Wills, the housemaster. “We all feel the result is a great success.” One sixth former in his new study remained to be convinced. “It’s not like the houseroom … it’s so quiet in our studies there’s nothing to do but work.”
