Toye

Cranleigh Toye

The first reference to a special work area for senior boys, which were the forerunners of toyes, came as early as 1886. By the 1960s houses started to be converted so all boys were allocated a toye from the fourth form, only moving on when they were finally allocated a study.   These remained at Cranleigh into the 1990s. The word toye originated at Winchester College although theirs was spelt without an ‘e’.
